Morris County Wildlife Removal Tip of the Month: Do Mothballs Or Ammonia Help Repel Rodents?

You have probably heard of numerous home remedies that claim to repel rodents no matter where they are. This can seem like a great option for people who have rodents on their property but don't want to have to physically remove them or set up traps. Even if you successfully repel rodents, you will still need to remove all potential food sources and seal up entry points into your home to prevent new animals from coming back. A successful repellent, however, could make this much easier and add to your line of defenses. Unfortunately, neither mothballs nor ammonia will be very effective.

The Theory
Mothballs and ammonia are commonly recommended for repelling rodents along with nearly every other type of nuisance wildlife. The idea is that because they smell so strongly, the animals won't be able to handle the stench and leave. With mothballs, you would simply place them around a given area to get rodents that are already there to leave and prevent new ones from coming. In the case of ammonia, you would soak rags or other similar items with it and then place it like you did the mothballs.

The Issues
The biggest issue with trying to repel rodents using mothballs or ammonia is that it simply won't work. Even if the rodent dislikes the smell, they aren't likely to leave the area just because of that. Leaving would mean searching for a new place to live and being unprotected from the elements and predators in the meantime. Instead, they will just stay and get used to the smell.

Another problem is that the smell associated with both mothballs and ammonia fades over time. This means that if it did work, you would have to reapply them every few weeks and every time it rains in the case of repellents used outdoors.

Finally, either of these two remedies poses some serious health risks. Mothballs are known carcinogens, meaning they can put your family at risk of cancer. Ammonia is also toxic. Because of this, you have to be careful when handling the substances and can only use them in areas with good ventilation. Pets and children can't go anywhere near them, meaning you would have to provide constant supervision.

What Does Work
While you shouldn't expect mothballs or ammonia to repel rodents, there are other ways to keep them away from your property. Start by making your home unappealing to the animals by removing food and shelter. Be sure to seal up any potential entry points into your house. If there are already rodents inside, you can hire a professional to remove them via trapping or exclusion.
